Most people don’t think to express gratitude to the structure that protects you and your possessions – you know, that intimate environment you have created for yourself that you call Home? I’m here to remind you to take some time to spread the love to your beloved four walls once in a while. A home that is filled with gratitude feels warmer and more inviting. It’s the energetic foundation that inexplicably makes one identical home feel much different than the other. Here are three ways you can do this:
Just Say It
As you walk through your home, simply thank it for housing you, protecting you and keeping you safe. The act of saying your intentions aloud will start the process. Continue on when you have a quiet moment of contemplation – lighting a candle, saying a prayer, meditating, taking a shower- and try to focus on something in particular about your home that you are grateful for.
I’m a fan of sage. Its effects can be miraculous. Just as you would clean the dirt, grease, grime and grit from your home, you need to clean the energetic atmosphere.
Nowadays you can find dried, bundled sage at any Whole Foods, Fairway, Wild Oats or organic health food store. After cleaning your home, light up one end of the sage, blow it out and walk through your space as you visualize the bad juju leaving and the good energy staying. Smoke burning rituals have been around through the ages and have been a part of nearly every culture – from the Catholic Church using frankincense, to Indian temples burning incense to Native Americans burning sage. As you “clean” the energies of your home, express your gratitude in every room.
Don’t let your home repair To-Do list get out of control. When you have outstanding tasks that are centered on maintaining your space and you don’t get around to them in a timely fashion, they will energetically take their toll on you. The constant nagging of unfinished household tasks can weaken your chi and affect you subconsciously. So when a faucet is dripping, a door handle is broken or a light bulb needs to be changed, don’t procrastinate – get on it! Maintain your home as needed before everyday jobs snowball into what feels like an overwhelming and insurmountable mountain of chores.
I have been in thousands of homes in my career, reading the energy and helping create better spaces for my clients. It’s not about filling your home with “things” it’s about filling it with gratitude. A home that has been honored and lovingly tended to has a noticeably warmer and more special atmosphere. Give it a try and let me know what you think.
