When my daughter turned seven, all she wanted was her room redecorated. She grew out of pink and wanted a beach theme with white walls and “lots of shades of blues and turquoise”. My husband and I tackled the whole project in one weekend, sending her to her Aunt & Uncle so we could get to work and give her an HGTV “big reveal moment” when she returned.
The DIY Projects
A tin letter purchased at Pottery Barn Teen was turned into a marquee letter by drilling holes and adding a string of lights. It became one of my favorite features.
Wood from Build It Green, which was already painted blue on one side was turned into a rustic shelf. Luchia loves mermaids and crystals so they became a theme through out.
I found the headboard on craigslist, painted it turquoise, distressed it and draped some actual turquoise on it. The linens and lampshades are from Pottery Barn Teen. I love mixing prints in the same “pool” color.
The light fixture was just a decorative element that I found in an antique store in Connecticut. My husband wired it and added an Edison bulb. I also stuck an air plant in there on the bottom.
I painted the ocean picture above her bed.
The Good Finds
The knobs on the old dresser were switched out for handmade sea glass knobs from Etsy. The portrait of Luchia was a sketch that artist Marti Cormand did of her during a cocktail party! The porcelain tooth jar holds all her baby teeth (eight so far!) and the sea glass vase is from West Elm. The blue lacquer stand was from One Kings Lane .
She made the mermaid painting herself!
The desk below was another craigslist score ($50) that I painted glossy white and added turquoise knobs from Anthropologie. When Luchia came home for the reveal, she was delighted and surprised and could not believe the change. I love it too!
