For the last fourteen I’ve been working as a Feng Shui consultant. During this time, I lectured and taught around the country, yanking this ancient subject into the 21st century when needed. In some ways, my approach with Feng Shui shifted from my early teachings and I began to shed some of the arcane principals that didn’t make sense, I kept concepts that worked well for my clients and dropped all the teachings that were based in fear. (Ancient Feng Shui Pet Peeve #32, “A mirror in the bedroom will steal your soul!”) I began to address all areas of my clients life – not just for example that they had lots of clutter, but I’d delve into the real reasons they were holding on to stuff and accumulating. When I dealt with their emotional, spiritual and physical aspects of their space and self, their transformations were extremely effective and long lasting. Their stories, as well as my modernized, holistic Feng Shui approach became the inspiration for my book.
After years of writing, it was sent out to publishers. Some publishers didn’t get it and said things like “Feng Shui was big in the 90’s…not so sure about now.” I had to laugh….laugh while I was running to an appointment to meet a developer who hired me to implement my expertise on a modern high rise. Or, “Feng Shui is too much a of New Age topic and not relevant anymore”. I found that interesting. So did Pratt Institute who is on the forefront of the future of design and architecture where I teach credited AIA seminars to established architects and its become their most popular class. So popular, that they asked me to come up with another related seminar to keep up with the demand. (I named that class after my book and I can’t wait to make my book a required course purchase.) “It’s not a topic that’s in demand” was another rejection. Tell that to About.com who hired me to film a ton of modern Feng Shui segments because their high tech data processing, algorithms and calculations track that this is a highly searched topic and they needed to keep up with it.
Fast forward to the one house that got it. Thank you to Skyhorse Publishing and Nicole Frail who had the insight, intelligence and balls to take a chance on publishing my book. I can’t wait to promote the hell out of this book and watch it inch up the best seller list. I can’t wait to deliver controversial or intelligent or practical or relatable sound bytes to the media that drum up a frenzy for this book. I turned in my manuscript to Skyhorse on December 31, 2014 and when I recently got it back with their well done and thorough comments, it started to feel real. The book cover brought a tear to my eye. This wasn’t just a Word document and a dream anymore. Its going to be a real book. Found everywhere that books are sold! Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Books A Million and IndieBound! I can’t wait until January 2016 when The Holistic Home: Feng Shui Your Mind, Body, Spirit, Space comes out. Stay tuned for more book updates here.
