We often hear from design gurus and shelter magazines that our homes should tell our stories. Yes, it should – to a certain extent. While you want your home to show who you are and what you love, you also want to make sure that the back story – the emotional underpinnings and the hidden issues in your life – are healthy, uplifting, and inspiring. It’s so important to check the subliminal and unintentional meaning of everything you surround yourself with. Learn to create a story for not only who you are, but also who you want to be.
- Examine All Your Artwork, Collectible and Photographs
You might think you love it – hey it’s a picture of you and the family, right? Well, when I nudged one client to tell me more about the vacation photo of her beloved family that she had displayed in her office, she realized that it was a stressful moment. She told me that the kids were hungry and felt forced to pose, her husband was not feeling well and the sun felt like “piercing rays of fire in my squinty eyes”. Truly examine the underlying emotions you have to every item you surround yourself with.
- Don’t Keep Items Because You Feel You Have To
Even though you adored your Aunt Edna, you don’t have to hold onto all the items she bequeathed to you that you don’t like or even use. Remember, “stuff” is not that person. Choose an item that you love that reminds you of that person and make sure you are honoring it by using it or displaying it properly.
- Create a Home That Reflects Your Goals
In addition to surrounding yourself with the things you truly love, try to add some objects that are new and fresh and reflect your future aims. If you are single and want a relationship, make the space for two in your home. If you want to stop procrastinating, tackle piles of paperwork and clothes first. If you desire a more peaceful life, bring in what represents serenity and reflection to you (objects of faith, aromatherapy, a place to meditate) and take out what does not support that (clutter, bright fluorescent lighting, electronic pollution).
By looking deeper beneath the surface, you can do more than surround yourself with the things you love (or think you love). You can create a space that supports you in reaching the next level of where you hope to be. Every item we surround ourselves with is energetically imbued with a subconscious meaning. Allow your home to uplift, inspire and motivate to help you achieve your dreams.
